Break from 365 cards this week

Every week I was trying to make up with all the week's cards by Saturday midnight to be part of 365 cards challenge all stars. But after a crazy week this week, as usual I kept some work till weekend and I do not think I will be able to make it this week. Crazy that I am, since my group ride got cancelled, I went biking this morning by myself, fell and had a minor injury which is not letting sit, stand  or walk. So I am just going to rest up for today.

But while I am here, I thought I will at least update with the two other cards I made during the meetup this week. As always, it is fun to make cards in a group and I love crafting with Jennifer. She always has clean and simple card ideas.

The one new technique I learnt was scoring diagonally to give a tile look which is seen in the thank you card below. This card below, we used punches for the most part but look at how simple but nice card it is.

Day 26 - Peace, Love and Happiness

I have to admit this was tough, especially if you are not in that mindset. I could pick and choose one of the Peace, Love and Happiness and make a card with it easily. But I wanted to include them all. Finally I did make a card, though I am not too happy with it.

I wanted to make three small circles with Peace, Love and Happiness but when I cut them, they turned out to be too big for the card. This is how things end up when you try to make a card at 12 am. :) I wanted to show the dove and a string holding each of these circles from the dove - Dove represents peace and instead of just showing a peace symbol, I thought I will depict a dove conveying all three. Anyways since the circles came out too big, I had to settle with this. Sometimes you just have to be happy with what you got. :)

By the way, did you know how the peace symbol originated? Apparently symbol for Peace is a combination of semaphores for 'N' and 'D' in Nuclear Disarmament and was designed by Gerald Holtem in 1958 during British Disarmament Movement. This challenge has made me think about it as my favorite was a dove with an olive branch and hence I did a search. :)

Day 27 - My Beautiful Balloon

I am jumping a day here. I did not make yesterday's card - Peace, Love & Happiness which is hard to make right now. So decided to skip it and get back to it tomorrow. Instead I picked an easy one - My beautiful balloon.

Today's Challenge : have some balloons of any size or variety on the card. I made a simple but elegant card using vellum embossing today. The middle piece of the window is the vellum paper embossed with sizzix  polka dots embossing folder. This one is dedicated to Jennifer for this piece as it's her design. We had a card making meetup today in Redmond and Jennifer hosts this meetup. This one happened to be one of the cards we made while we were there.

Art Journaling

I saw this class poster at Ben Franklin last week and I was intrigued to know what it was about. So I registered for this class and it was yesterday. Beth taught the class and it was so much fun. She started with reading a permission - permission to let go, let go of all the inhibitions, be yourself, go wild and not be in boundaries and let it flow. She had done research for the last one year on Art Journaling and she mentioned that it is therapeutic. For example, if you see yourself going for dark colors while painting your art journal, it means there is something bothering you. So people have studied art journals to understand people's psychology apparently. This is what we made in the class yesterday. Keep in mind, no two journals were the same. Everyone used different colors, different images and painted it their own way.

She says its an exercise to let go, which is tough. She also read some art journaling prompts that would help with that. Like letting others draw the background which you cannot control or picking the colors you do not like and working with them. If you don't like it, apply some gesso and start over again. You don't lose anything. It's your journal and you create what you like out of it.

Basically the way it work is that you start with an art journal, which you can get at any art store. You start with applying a layer of gesso - a primer for your paint so that the paper does not absorb the paint. We tried black, white and clear gessos. Then we  used heat gun to dry the gesso. Watch out how much you apply gesso, as it might take way too long to dry or even stick the pages together (which is what I did). Then after the first layer, apply a layer of acrylic paint. You can choose any number of colors. Then it's up to you to depict whatever you want on it.

We were taught to make Collages. Collages - are putting some pictures together to convey the message. It was not much about the image itself but the blending of colors and patterns. To apply the images, we just tore off images from magazines, but you can do essentially anything. To paste them to the paint, we used Matte medium.  Then I stamped with the regular stamps and stazon ink. I also used Sharpie poster paint markers, water based to write on it. You could use daubers, glitter etc.  you name it, you can use it. Hence the reason it is called mixed media art.

If you are artsy and you like to maintain a journal, I think it is a great way to do it. Let go of your troubles, inhibitions and just indulge yourself in art. Of course, even if you are not artsy, like me who never learnt to paint, still it is a great idea in my opinion.

I have ordered this book called Art Journals and Creative Healing as I am intrigued by this whole concept of  Art Journaling.

Are scarves pretty or the models?

I never posted this on my blog. I was going through my pictures today and saw some old pictures from last year. I thought I needed to post this at least for the reason that my friends were being a good sport by modeling with the scarves I made for them.

Every time I go visit my friends in Bay area, I have a blast. Those are the best times, as I laugh non-stop and I never feel like coming back to Seattle. The reason for that is totally my loving friends. I make something for them every time I go, just so they don't get tired of me visiting them, just kidding. :) I absolutely love my friends. This one was from last March when I made each of them a scarf with a hobby that I had just learnt - knitting. See how good my friends are. They have modeled so gracefully for the scarves. The models definitely win. :)

Day 25 - Super Sketchy Sunday

It's Sunday and it 's Super Sketchy day. Here is my interpretation of the sketch that Pam had for the challenge today.
Here is Pam's sketch
Sundays have become my favorite days as it makes it much easier to work with a known sketch when making a card. I loved this layout and just had to play with patterned paper, stamps and embellishments to go with the sketch. Thank You stamp is from the Recollections stamps set and the ribbons from Taylored expressions kit for February month and the daisies embellishments from Martha Stewart's.

This one goes to Day 25- Super Sketchy Sunday challenge on 365 cards challenge blog.

Day 24 - Fabulous Fonts

The challenge is to use three different types of fonts on the card. I literally followed it word to word. PTI Happy Birthday stamps set was my savior for this today for making this card.

Again, very similar to the butterflies card I made for color challenge, I applied the same principle for fonts. Here it is. As you can see there are more than three fonts and colored inks too. This cupcake is from TPS digital stamps which I colored with markers.

Day 23 - Color Scheme

The challenge was color scheme today and it was not as much of the colors that was a challenge but that I was running out of ideas. This is one problem of procrastinating and finally trying to do too many things. I went on a 33 mile bike this morning and I was exhausted. But I still wanted to keep up with the 365 day All stars since I have not been able to make it to spotlight designers. So I saw a card form PTI on Pinterest and I really liked it. Hence this card is inspired from that card.  Here is mine.

Day 20 -You are Invited

Day 20 - theme was to create an invitation to an event and include images that depict what type of celebration it's going to be. I made an invitation for a housewarming party. I liked this digital stamp image, I got from paper shelter.
